Hot Springs, Arkansas – Colorado Springs, Colorado

These U.S. Highways eventually replaced the Albert Pike Highway: U.S. 270, U.S. 64, U.S. 183, U.S. 154, U.S. 50, U.S. 85.

AlbertPikeThe Albert Pike Highway is named for the famous Freemason of Arkansas. He was born in Boston in December, 1809 but found his way to Arkansas via Santa Fe in the 1830s. He worked as an author, editor, lawyer, teacher and was very involved in Arkansas politics. He was a soldier in the Mexican war and fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. The highway traveled 1569 miles through Washington, Oregon and California. It was one of the original 1926 highways and was decommissioned in 1972.

U.S. 98 is a 1934 highway when the original route was from Apalachicola to Pensacola. Its current east to west route travels through Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.

U.S. 97 is one of the original 1926 highways. Its current north to south route travels through Washington, Oregon and California. For a time in the 1950s, U.S. 97 showed up on maps in Alaska from Council to Nome and from Tetlin National Wildlife Reserve to Livengood.

Current Mileage: 170 miles

U.S. 96 is an original 1926 highway. From 1926-1939, it ran from Houston, TX to Brownsville, TX. Its current east to west route travels just 170 miles through Texas. Some sites and towns along the way are: Tenaha, Flat Fork, Center, Jasper, Lumberton, Beaumont and Port Arthur (southern terminus).
